The Grist climate fiction writing story contest is now open for submissions, with the application deadline set for June 24, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. (U.S. Pacific Time). Grist is thrilled to announce the fourth year of their Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors short story contest. This initiative invites writers worldwide to imagine a future where solutions to the climate crisis thrive, leading to radical improvements in our world.
Premise:
Imagine 2200 celebrates stories that depict equitable climate progress over the next decades to centuries. We seek narratives that envision futures of abundance, adaptation, reform, and hope. We’re interested in stories rooted in creative climate solutions and community-centered resilience, illustrating the potential impact of these solutions and offering engaging plots with compelling characters and settings.
In 2,500 to 5,000 words, share the world you dream of building.
Prizes:
- The winning writer will receive $3,000.
- The second and third-place winners will be awarded $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.
- Additionally, nine finalists will each receive $300.
- All winners and finalists will have their stories published in an immersive collection on Grist’s website.
Preparation Guidelines for Your Story File:
- Upload your short story as a Word document (.doc accepted; .docx preferred).
- Name your Word document following this format: title of your story – YEAR; e.g., Story Title – 2024.
- Remove any identifying biographical information (including your name) from your document.
- The first page of your document should feature your story’s title and word count at the top in Arial 14-point font.
- The rest of your document should use Arial 12-point font with double line spacing and at least one-inch margins.
- All document pages should include a header in the upper right-hand corner with the correct sequential page number, starting on page 1, and your story’s title.
